Some Quick Music
To piggyback on my friend George's post for Canadian Music Friday I decide it was time to throw some music back on my blog. It's late so I'm only doing one - but I think this is one of the best songs performed by quite possibly the best band ever.
"Don't Do It" The Band
Rick Danko's voice is so sweet on this and of course Levon's is just as rough as ever. The talent that these 5 men had/have (Richard Manuel and Rick Danko have passed away) is unbelievable. I never tire of listening to them.

Pretty damn cool
My blog friend Victoria posted this video on her blog. I though it was pretty damn cool so thought I'd post it over here.
Parents & Kids Rant
I don't have my own kids. I have three great nieces who I love dearly-but I was happy to leave the parenting to my sister. This is fine by my parents, they are happy with three grandkids and don't really feel that they need anymore. I had a psychic recently tell me I was going to marry a younger man and have a baby when I was 43. I'll be 40 this year - so I guess anything can happen - but I'll just say this -Trent Reznor is 42 so if I'm not having his baby I doubt I'm having anyone's baby.
Anyway, I know that parenting is not an easy job and not for one minute would I ever make light of it. But when I am in a store and I see a parent negotiating with their 3-4 year old I want to go mental. It's all I can do to stop myself from walking up to them and smacking them off the back of the head and saying "you are the fucking parent, now act like it for Christ sakes!"
What is this shit anyway? A kid is throwing fit in the grocery store and instead of dragging them out of the store and throwing them in the car the mother stands there and asks "Oh honey, what do you want" or even better "If you stop crying you can have x or y" and on and on. How about this golden oldie "If you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry about." Or my personal favorite "If you don't knock it off there will be two noises - me hitting you and you hitting the floor." Now before I go any farther let me be clear I am not advocating beating your kids in any way. My parents didn't do much more than a quick smack on the ass on occasion. Although believe me it should have been much worse.
My point here is YOU ARE THE PARENT, find your backbone and act like it so the rest of us don't have to suffer through something akin to Teamster negotiations in the damn cereal aisle.
There, I feel better. I haven't had a good rant in a while.

One More Day
It's Thursday and I'm exhausted. (only one more day to go) It's that kind of exhaustion where your head actually hurts and you feel like you can't wake up. It also means I've completely lost my filter and the things coming out of my mouth are not always nice or very politically correct. I'm headed off to shower in a minute but thought a few quick things were in order.
* Dale Ernhardt Jr's new number will be 88 and the sponsor will be Mountain Dew Amp so instead of a read 8 we now hae a green 88. I predict that tatoo parlors in the south will be very busy between now and the beginning of the next racing season.
* The army has started a new program to test soldier's brain's before they are depolyed. This way if they are suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury (the hallmark injury of this war) they now have a baseline. FINALLY.
*My mom is coming to have lunch with me today - I'm very happy about that - sometimes you just need your mom.
*I'm not all that surprised that the jury is at an impasse at the Phil Spector trial.
*I'm also not surprised that OJ Simpson has been charged with more crimes. He is the biggest scumbag ever to get away with murder. He lives his life like we all owe him something. Fucking Asshole - I hope they charge him with kidnapping which usually is a Federal offense. He can then go to a Federal Pen and become someone's bitch. His new name will be O Jenny Simpson and he'll look great in a wig and lipstick.
*If you haven't read about the Jena 6 trial - look it up. Unfortunately I can't do a link because I'm working on my Mac. I don't know why I'm so surprised that this kind of racism still is alive in the US but I am. It's beyond disturbing.
*Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been denied access to the WTC site. Apparently he wanted to lay a wreath. I don't know about you but not only do I now want him at the site. I don't want him in our country. He is a hate monger who sponsor's terrorism. Why are we entertaining him (and on our tax $$).
I'm sure there is a lot more news out there I could comment on but I gotta get moving. Once again please remember that exhaustion = spelling errors so be kind.

No Coincidences
A little while back I talked about there being no coincidences. Today I experienced another incident that just solidfies my posiiton on this. I met my friend Kate at my first residency and it turned out that she lived just two towns over from me. She has continually helped me with my papers and has just been a great resource in general. Well tonight she came through again...in a BIG ass way.
The name of my thesis is "Should we send them if we can't treat them? Veterans navigate the VA system." When I sent it to Kate to read she called me and said "I think I have an uncle who works for the VA, let me call him and I'll get back to you." I was thinking this is great news because I need someone who I can interview and who can introduce me to some returning vets for my research.
So Kate calls me back - her uncle doens't work at the VA anymore - but what he does now is head the Governer's Council on Seamless Transition and he is on several committees having to do with Traumatic Brain Injury AND Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His actual job is meeting vets as they come home and helping them navigate the VA system. As Kate so aptly put it this guy is PAYDIRT for me. Kate spoke to him and he said he would be willing to speak to me anytime and that he does a fair amount of work with students. He also mentioned that he would be happy to speak to anyone who was doing any work around the recent treatment of vets.
My point is - you never know why people come into your life. You may think it's for one reason and then something else shows up. When that something else does show up - believe me, it's no coincidence.

Maybe It's Not So Bad
So my thesis proposal was accepted without any revisions!! And to top it off they want to put it on the school website as an example of a thesis proposal which is very exciting. Right now I'm supposed to be in a study group so I should really head down there now.
Tonight is the ceremony of completion which is always very nice - so I'm off!

Exhaustion Sets In
So it's Wednesday - midweek through the program - and it's typically the day that exhaustion and sometimes hysterica sets in. It's hard to explain to people on the outside just how intense and exhausting this week really is. You are engaged in intellectual conversation all day - at every meal and during your breaks. When you are not conversing you are usually in some kind of workshop where you are learning all kinds of new stuff. There are moments when you just think "OK thats it, brain is full - no more". What starts to happen is you see a fair amount of people break down in tears. I saw a few yesterday and expect to see more today. In fact I woke up crying this morning and I'm not sure why. Could be exhaustion although I feel pretty good about my work load. The fact is you stay up late working on stuff and you are up early and immediately engaged - I'm thinking going back to work sounds pretty good right now - almost like a vacation.
The other emotion that starts to emerge is hysteria. New students (we have 11) are starting to wonder if they can do this and start to get slightly hysterical with the thought that they can't. Even as adults we are so ashamed of failure and the thought of failing sends most of us over the edge. As a returning student and a voice I'll spend a lot of time this morning checking in with people and seeing how everyone is doing offering support when I can and the odd smack on the back of the head when appropriate.
Off to shower and to start the day.
